Artist's Statement
Joan began painting shortly before retiring from Duke Medical Center as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in 1999. She began in watercolors but discovered acrylics when she worked with Jane Filer, a North Carolina artist who encouraged her to work in her own style using the colors she loved. Over the years Joan has taken classes from other art teachers but always has been true to her fun and cheerful style. She often paints on location with a desire to capture the joy of life..
In 2006, she moved from North Carolina to St. Petersburg, Fl. and paints in her studio called "The Red Door." Summers she returns to her old painting home in North Carolina and displays her work in Chapel Hill and Durham.
Her works have been purchased by Athens Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center for Cardiology, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, including a large commissioned installation "The Animals of Harmony Bay" and The Pediatric Eye Center and Clinic. John Hopkins University purchased paintings for the new Resident Hall, Charles Commons that opened in August 2006. Her animals have homes in two Veterinary Clinics in North Carolina including the paintings "All Good Dogs Go to Heaven" and "All Good Cats Go to Heaven. In 2009 she completed a Bistro Series for the law firm of Womble Carlyle in Atlanta, Ga. Her works are collected throughout the United States.
